August 19: Special Governing Body Meeting Work Session on Data Centers
Special Topeka City Meeting on Data Centers
Holliday Building 214 SE 8th Ave
5:00-7:00 pm
For this meeting, Topeka City Manager Robert Perez had originally proposed:
(1 hour) Compass Data Centers to provide a 15-minute overview and 45-minute Q&A,
(30 minutes) City Manager (and potentially the Mayor) of Red Oak, TX (nearest Compass Data Center) for 10-minute City overview and 20-minute Q&A,
(30 minutes) Evergy infrastructure planning discussion for 10 minutes and 20-minute Q&A.
Instead, the City of Red Oak notified the City of Topeka that they are no longer going to be participating in this work session. The City of Topeka also reached out to Compass and Evergy to ask if they have formal presentations, which is TBD.
Red Oak Notes: Compass Datacenters' touts Red Oak as a huge success, particularly the number of jobs. This is because the Red Oak facility builds 85% of the pre-fabricated modular datacenters in their town. Shawnee County would not have such a manufacturing facility here. The job numbers are apples to oranges, as Shawnee County’s proposal is only a hyperscale data center (not building facility) which would place enormous strain on already overburdened utility and water infrastructure.
