Nuclear Energy Headed to Shawnee County - 1.3 mi from School?
Data centers will require enormous amounts of energy to power, and once established there will be many solutions offered to this newly created problem. One of those energy solutions that Shawnee County seems to be working on for proposed data centers could very well be nuclear power - including untested, risky technology. Nationally, Nuclear safety rules have been loosened:
Bill Gates’ Microsoft tested the soil at the proposed data center site on 8/27/2024.
Are they planning to bring nuclear 1.3 miles away from an elementary school?
“The orders slash hundreds of pages of requirements for security at the reactors. They also loosen protections for groundwater and the environment and eliminate at least one key safety role. The new orders cut back on requirements for keeping records, and they raise the amount of radiation a worker can be exposed to before an official accident investigation is triggered.”
This puts the folks of Shawnee County in grave danger. This is not the same nuclear as in the past with loosening protections for the people near these power plants.

“Our Gravity Reactor is unproven,” the filing said “and our design, borehole development activities, planned pilot reactor, and future commercial applications may fail, progress more slowly than projected, or encounter delays or changes that increase costs and capital requirements.”
This isn’t just a regular nuclear reactor program- this untested, prototype technology they are putting underground. Too many folks feel comfortable in sacrificing “fly over country” with the risk of nuclear catastrophe.
There are no “minor” nuclear incidents – and radioactive and toxic waste into our groundwater will not stop at the imaginary city boundaries.
For the establishment of nuclear energy, Shawnee County and City of Topeka will need to establish a robust 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone and 50 mile radius for monitoring agricultural products and drinking water.
We will need to ensure that Evergy’s Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station 60 miles south of us in Burlington, Kan. can they safely monitor and respond to both nuclear power sites. What happens if a natural disaster impacts both nuclear power plants near our community at once?
We will need alert and notification systems, sheltering in place strategies, and massive evacuations of our constituents in the event of a nuclear reactor failure. We will need a plan and an immediate, thorough response to save our most vulnerable neighbors: the elderly, the hospitalized, the children in schools, the folks without reliable transportation.
If we cannot trust our roads to be cleared of snow; how can we trust that the community will be safely and quickly evacuated and protected from nuclear catastrophe?
Do you trust that the City of Topeka or Shawnee County staff will evacuate all residents - including the elderly, medical fragile, and schools - within a 10 mile radius of a nuclear site next to Montara swiftly?
Because there are no “minor” nuclear catastrophes.
