In January 2025, Senate Bill 98 was introduced in the Kansas Legislature as a Route 66 commemorative license plate bill. Ninety days later, the words “license plate” were gone — and in their place stood a 20-year sales tax exemption for data centers, worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
